By: Susan Mckeon, Lincolnshire Greyhound Trust The Lincolnshire Greyhound Trust’s walk coincides with day two of its annual Long Nose Day and Fun Dog Show. This walk will set off from Marton Village Hall, near Gainsborough at 10am and will kick off proceedings for the dog show. Speaking in preparation for Great British Greyhound Walk, Janet Peacock, founder of Greyhound Walks, one of the co organisers of the event, explained: “We held our first Greyhound Walk in April 2006 with 5 greyhounds and their owners getting together, we now have walks four weekends of the month throughout Essex, Suffolk and Hertfordshire which just goes to show how popular greyhounds are becoming as pets. “Our record attendance at a walk was on 1 January 2010 when 168 dogs went walking, this was the inspiration for a national event to see how many dogs we could get out walking together across the country. It also gives us a greyhound owners the chance to show the great British public what beautiful, sedate animals greyhounds are” Every year thousands of greyhounds retire from racing, many of them only three or four years old. Several charities, including the Lincolnshire Greyhound Trust, are dedicated to finding homes as family pets for these dogs. Kev Stow, of Lincolnshire Greyhound Trust, said: “People tend to have a lot of misconceptions about greyhounds. In spite of their speed on the track they don’t need a lot of exercise and are really the 40 mph couch potatoes of the dog world. “We hope that the walk will show how they make great family pets and that they take their retirement very seriously!” The walk is only open to greyhound and lurcher owners and all dogs are required to be kept on leads. If you have another breed of dog however, you can still come along and take part in the Fun Dog Show which has classes for greyhounds, lurchers and all other breeds.
