June 10, 2010 - PRLog -- Chicago, IL… On Wednesday, June 9, 2010,  volunteer members of The Puppy Mill Project rescued 28 puppies from a  puppy mill that was closing in an undisclosed location in the state of Missouri.

For information of what a puppy mill is and the puppy mill/pet store connection read "What is a puppy mill at  http://www.thepuppymillproject.org/?page_id=12 .

According to Cari Meyers, CEO and founder of The Puppy Mill Project, “The rescued dogs ranged  in age from  three months to nine years old.”

There were a more than 7 different breeds among the 28 rescued dogs and included:   Maltese, Poodles, Beagles, Cocker Spaniels, Pomeranians, Dachshunds, and Havanese.

The Puppy Mill Project participants in the rescue are from Illinois.  Brenda Bratton of Georgia  who is an advocate in the fight against puppy mills was  instrumental in placing the rescued dogs.

The dogs were taken to no kill animal shelters in Illinois and Wisconsin where they will be examined and evaluated for adoption.

For more information about the rescued dogs and The Puppy MIll Project email info@thepuppymillproject.org and write Missouri puppies in the subject line.

According to Meyers it is common for puppy mills to dispose of unwanted dogs by putting them down.  For example,   females dogs who are bred more than twice a year for  their entire lives are frequently killed when they can no longer produce large litters of puppies.

The Puppy Mill Project is an Illinois 501(c)3 registered charity and was created in September of 2009 by Cari Meyers.

The organization is a leader in the fight against puppy mills and the pet shops whose puppies originate from puppy mills.

One of the organization's primary missions is educating the public about what puppy mills really are and the direct connection to the pet stores, the internet ads and the newspaper ads that sell these puppies that come from "canine hell."

The Puppy Mill Project also supports state and federal legislation that protects dogs from the inhumane treatment they receive in puppy mills. Along with many community events they also organize demonstrations against businesses that sell puppy mill dogs. The organization's website is: http://www.thepuppymillproject.org
