June 5, 2010 - PRLog -- Surprise, Arizona— Recently, Imagine Prep at Surprise held the first ever induction for the Imagine Prep at Surprise chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS).  Members are elected to the chapter by the faculty council and must have a minimum 3.5 grade point average. In addition to grade point average the faculty council selects members based on demonstration of the four NHS ideals—scholarship, service, leadership, and character.

“National Honor Society is a prestigious organization that recognizes a select group of high school students,” said John Buzzard, Principal of Imagine Prep at Surprise. “I am extremely proud of each of the students who were selected as Imagine Prep’s inaugural members.”

During the traditional candlelight ceremony six students: Tiffany Avila, Erin Burk, Jennifer Choi, Brooke Kottmann, James Risher and Emily Scattergood were granted the honor of being the first members inducted into the Imagine Prep at Surprise chapter of the National Honor Society.

“This group of outstanding students will have the responsibility of establishing our chapter’s service projects and traditions,” explained Tim Hulstrom, Guidance Counselor and NHS Advisor. “In the tradition of NHS, this group of students will be vested with the duty of serving as academic role models for their peers.”

National Honor Society was formed in 1919 when a proposal by J.G. Masters, a principal at Central High School in Omaha, Nebraska, was adopted at the National Association of Secondary School Principals convention. Within the proposal, Character, Leadership, Scholarship, and Service were chosen as the “fundamental virtues most worthy of encouragement” in young people. The first chapter was established at Fifth Avenue High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on June 15, 1922, under the leadership of Dr. Edward Rynearson. The Imagine Prep chapter of National Honor Society was established in May 2010, under the leadership of Guidance Counselor Tim Hulstrom.
