June 6, 2010 - PRLog -- Passenger car sales in Pakistan rose 41.4% year-on-year (y-o-y) in the first nine months of FY09/10, when 86,483 units were shifted. The most recent monthly data (for March 2010) showed total passenger car sales of 11,208. The strongest growth was in the 1,300cc and above segment, which shifted 41,961 units in the nine-month period, a rise of 58% y-o-y.

In this context, we have revised up our forecast for new passenger car sales and expect growth of 42% in FY2009/10, compared with our previous forecast of 33%. As such, total new passenger car sales for the fiscal year as a whole should total 117,500 units, compared with our previous forecast of 110,500 units.

However, it has been a markedly different story in 2009/10 for the light commercial vehicle segment. Sales of pick-up trucks fell 3.6% y-o-y in the first nine months of fiscal year 2009/10, to a total of 11,509 units. We now predict sales of light commercial vehicles will decline 2% for the fiscal year as a whole, which will take total new sales in this category down to 16,200 units, from just fewer than 16,500 units during the last fiscal year.

Our revised forecasts entail total new vehicle sales of just short of 199,500 units, entailing aggregate growth (for all categories, inclusive of motorbikes) of 22% y-o-y during the fiscal year. This compares with our earlier forecast that total new vehicle sales will reach 193,000 units in the fiscal year, a rise of 18% y-o-y.

We expect a total annual production volume of just above 195,000 CBUs in FY2009/10, also a rise of around 18%. A total of 86,613 passenger cars were produced in the first nine months of FY09/10, an increase of 36.9% y-o-y. Pick-up production in the period fell 15.9% y-o-y, to 11,488 units.

Pak Suzuki Motor reported net profits of PKR255mn for calendar 2009, while Indus Motor posted net profits of PKR2.18bn during the first nine months of the 2009/10 fiscal year (a rise of 284% y-o-y).

These net profits were reasonably strong, considering the effects of the global economic downturn.
