Sean Richie Forms Strategic Business Partnership With Elementary School Kids
As summer vacation begins, Sean Richie strikes an agreement with his children to develop a powerful business relationship.
"So my kids officially start their summer vacation today. Another school year behind them. Another plateau reached. Nothing but absolutely freedom in the months that lay ahead… Summer vacation… What a glorious feeling… We’ve all been there… It’s a sensation that is impossible to forget, yet difficult to capture as an adult… Unadulterated liberty… What a rush…
Like most kids, mine tend to get bored easily – so I called a huddle and asked them both to think of a side-project they wanted to do this summer. Something creative, fun, and on-going that we could do together to occupy some of their time each day. Plus it would provide me a vehicle to do some good old fathering and pass along some life lessons, ya know..? My son, who just closed out Kindergarten, suggested that he and I form a band and go on tour together… I like where his head’s at… I really do…
My daughter, now entering 4th grade, also had a rather enterprising response… She wants to start a business and make a million dollars… Again, I’m far from disappointed in the thought-process of my offspring… Upon hearing his sister’s vision of the million dollar paycheck, my boy quickly abandoned his dreams of rock stardom and declared that he to was going to “do business” this summer as well… And immediately nominated himself for the position of “boss”…
So it was a deal – the three of us would be in business together and make a million dollars… Sweet… My daughter was so driven by the concept that she immediately blasted an email to all of her friends and family that she was now a partner in my cosmetic laser company and would be sending everyone a sales packet very soon… Seeing as medical-grade capital equipment isn’t a very “kid-friendly”
Anyway, we went through the possibilities and decided as a team that a home-based business made a lot more sense than opening a restaurant, a Wal-Mart, or a Ninja training facility… although that would be pretty cool… So a decision has been reached, and we will now embark on our summer journey as business partners… They are incredibly excited about the prospects and their unbridled enthusiasm is both inspiring and contageous… This is going to be fun…
As a father, I think of how to best prepare them for the world and what skills will serve them best in life. I honestly can’t think of a greater opportunity to demonstrate to my children the mechanisms that drive this economic world of our’s… The value of hard-work, imagination, and persistence…
This is going to be an amazing summer – I will keep you posted on their progress… And I urge you to do something special with your kids over this summer vacation… Afterall, they won’t be kids forever…"

When asked how he expected his children to perform as business associates, Richie said "I have always believed that adults would be much more productive sales people and business owners if they would behave more like children. And by children, I mean that they should commit themselves fully to what they want, live entirely in that reality, be as persistent as a pre-schooler who wants a toy, and suspend their disbelief until they receive what they wish to acquire... And these are Sean Richie's kids... They'll be fine..."
