Words Of CVS’ CEO Tom Ryan Unintentionally Highlight The Opportunity For Independent Pharmacies

June 4, 2010 - PRLog -- Benton Harbor MI – In response to CVS’s CEO, Tom Ryan, and his announcement of buying up 200 independent pharmacies each year as he spoke at an investors conference in New York; the creator of online marketing services for independent pharmacies (www.profitpharmacy.com), Robert Kress RPh CCN, claims that such a remark might be a little short-sided or even vague by a man who has such tremendous influence on the industry.

At the investors meeting, Tom Ryan was quoted as saying “It’s just tough for them to survive” on CVS’ plans to increase their market share by buying up about 200 pharmacies each year.

“I really am beginning to think that Tom Ryan either see’s the opportunity that the independent pharmacy market provides, and this is the only way he feels he can capture their customer base; or he does not understand the power of positioning that these pharmacies hold in patient care”, says Kress.

CVS operates over 7000 stores in the United States, and Walgreen’s, the largest U.S. pharmacy chain, operates over 7500.  There are approximately 18000 independent pharmacies.

“The old paradigm of the independent pharmacist, an elderly gentleman with gray hair and bifocal’s is one of the past; now there is a new paradigm being created, of active members in the healthcare community working closely with physicians, changing peoples’ health and their lives through their expertise in the compounding of medications as well as clinical based nutrition services, these are the modern day independent pharmacists.” Kress adds.

“The model now is heading toward better patient care; “how can we solve patient problems”, not just with allopathic medications, but with customized medications as well as nutritional services.” He said.  “The Baby Boomers have told us loud and clear, they do not want a one size fits all approach anymore, nor do they want to wait in line waiting for their number to be called just to pick up a prescription.”
