June 2, 2010 - PRLog -- New York—The Grand Central Oyster Bar will present its annual Holland Herring Festival beginning Wednesday, June 9, at 12:00 noon with the official “First Tasting” of the “nieuwe maatjes” herring air-expressed from the Netherlands as the star of the show throughout the two week festival.  And there are co-stars aplenty on the Dutch festival stage. A pair of Heineken nights on consecutive Thursdays – June 10 and June 17 – as well as Dutch martinis featuring Holland imports Ketel One vodka and Genever gin on the menu. The Herring Festival continues through Friday, June 25.

The herring filets are served with hard boiled egg, sweet onion and chives. Herring filets are priced at $7.00, and the herring salad at $7.95 per order. For aficionados of the Holland spirit, the “Dutch Treat” Martinis are priced at $11.75 for the Ketel One and $10.50 for the Genever. Heineken, Heineken Light and Amstel Light are all priced at $6.25 per bottle. All are available at the Saloon and Lounge bars throughout the festival.

Oyster Bar executive chef Sandy Ingber and general manager Jonathan Young will be joined by Ferdinand Dorsman, General Director of Cultural Affairs for the Consulate-General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and other dignitaries for the first tasting of the Herring Festival.  The Heineken nights will toast the ever-popular beer from Holland, as well as Heineken Premium Light and Amsterdam’s Amstel Lite. On Thursday night, June 10, from 6:00-8:00 pm, Heineken will salute Dutch sportsmen as a prelude to the World Cup, and sports writers, editors, broadcasters and producers will select the best athletes from the Netherlands in each professional sport.  On Thursday night, June 17, also from 6:00-8:00 pm, has been designated as a “Salute to the Dutch” and their contributions to New York.  The Heineken models will be on hand to greet customers each night, and prizes will be awarded.

The Oyster Bar has long been the traditional destination in America for the first Herring of the season.  The most-looked-forward-to time of the year for herring lovers, the delicacy arrives air-expressed to the Oyster Bar from Scheveningen, The Netherlands, on the North Sea where the herring fleet makes its home. The Oyster Bar always receives the very first herring shipped to the USA, and the cream of the catch, as well. Beginning on June 9th, and for approximately two weeks thereafter, the Oyster Bar looks forward to featuring the succulent, toothsome delicacy known as nieuwe maatjes herring. Herring lovers will enjoy the season for less than a month.
