Island Steel trades in and processes steel in wide coil, slit coil, de-doiled sheet and sheared blanks. Operating from its purpose built site on Alexandra Docks in Newport, South Wales, the plant operates as a service centre for the processing of customers own materials as well as for complete material supply to their customers full specifications.
With demand increasing for its services, the company needed a resilient inventory management solution to enables issuing, receipt and stock take using barcode enabled handheld mobile computers. From this rich reporting would be available real-time and the system must integrate into Sage.

Project benefits experienced

•   Ability to dynamically book in goods received by scanning barcodes, removing manual process, paper and duplication, and ultimately reducing data entry errors.

•   Automate issuing of stock, knowing what went to who and when, through the use of scanning barcodes.

•   Ability to rapidly do a stock take, cutting down on labour time and errors, plus giving you an accurate report on what stock is where. This went from 20 hours to just 2 hours with improved accuracy.

The project steps

Step 1:    Site survey – 1 day for 80,000 square feet factory/warehouse.

Step 2:    Requirements gathering of 2 days including areas such as the operation of receipt, issuing and stock take.

Step 3:    Plan implementation, confirm exact equipment requirement and write up software specification for approval.

Step 4:    Configure software application to Client requirements.

Step 5:    Pre-configure equipment, load application and complete full testing.

Step 6:    Installation, testing and training

Summary

Total time for completion was only 6 weeks and the system has been 100% stable since going live in September 2009.
