Spring Clean Your Humidifier to Ensure Healthy Air for Your Family

If your humidifier is still sitting out, now is the perfect time to clean and store it for the summer months. It’s also a good time to replenish your supply of filters and other accessories to ensure that you can start using your humidifier as soon as you need it again.

A thorough seasonal cleaning of your humidifier tank and base will remove mineral deposits and the bacteria, mold, and fungi that grow in moist environments. Cleaning instructions depend on the manufacturer and model that you own, so make sure you check the manual before starting. Normally, you’ll need white vinegar (or a specialized humidifier cleaning solution), water and a soft cloth. Following the manufacturer’s instructions, clean the tank and base of the humidifier. Rinse the tank with clean water until you no longer smell the cleaning solution.

When you finish cleaning your humidifier, wipe it down with a soft cloth and let it dry completely. Storing a damp humidifier could allow germs and mold to grow, which could then be circulated in the air next time you fill up your humidifier and turn it on. Store your dry humidifier in the original packaging or another safe place, making sure that all cords and parts are together.
