May 28, 2010 - PRLog -- Massachusetts - The Senate is tightening the belt on undocumented immigrants with a new bill that was passed yesterday.

The bill basically states that legally documented taxpaying citizens should come before undocumented illegal immigrants, preventing companies from hiring them and denying state benefits.

Republican Senator Richard Tisei called this a victory for the Republican Party, while Democratic State Senator Steven Baddour says the bill was a compromise between the two parties.

Massachusetts has an illegal immigration problem, and with tighter state budgets, Baddour claims it was important that state tax dollars be spent on legal taxpayer issues saying “We’re not going to tolerate illegal immigrants receiving state benefits in areas where we can afford to provide them to those who are here legally.”

This is different from the recent immigration bill passed in Arizona which gives the law enforcement officials the right to request legal documentation from any person thought to be undocumented.

Baddour's approach, according to him is "a very balanced approach and an approach that really protects the taxpayer.”

Immigration laws are often misinterpreted depending on the side of the fence you are sitting on, the bottom line often comes down to protecting the citizens that have followed the law versus those trying to circumvent the law.

Conversely, President Obama's new National Security Strategy, looks at immigration from a national power standpoint, stating as a priority “attracting the premier human capital for our workforce”.

The United States is now in competition with foreign powers to recruit and retain the worlds brightest for their workforce. Immigration reform seems to be the direct path to bringing more of this foreign talent in.

There are many things that can be done both to entice foreign students to immigrate to the U.S. and even more needs to be done to make sure they stay once they are here.

The immediate change needs to come in the form of new immigration laws and more avenues for immigrants to reach our shores in the way of green cards, visa's and work permits.
