May 28, 2010 - PRLog -- NALDERS SOLICITOR HOOKED ON EMPLOYMENT LAW

A local graduate has joined the ranks at leading law firm Nalders, having trained as a solicitor for the past four years and beaten the odds.

Melanie Crate, aged 26 who lives in Truro (originally from Illogan), attended Pool School and Cornwall College in Camborne, before studying Law and Sociology at Cardiff University - where she was told on her first day that only half of the students in the room would make it in law.

Made ever more determined to succeed, Melanie graduated with a 2:1 LLB Hons degree, but was then faced with further study and the financial burden of the Legal Practice Course.

Deciding to take time out to recharge her batteries and prepare herself for the further commitment ahead, Melanie was met with the support – both financially and professionally - of Nalders Solicitors, which has now resulted in her joining their employment department as a fully qualified solicitor.

Melanie said, “At University it was made clear how competitive a career in law is.  On our first day we were told that only half of us in the lecture theatre would ever work in law! This made me even more determined, but on graduating, being faced with undertaking the Legal Practice Course straight away is a big financial commitment, without any guarantees.”

Melanie continued, “So I took some time out and then was delighted to be accepted as a paralegal at Nalders, starting in the litigation department in April 2006 and moving to employment and commercial several months later. Nalders then offered me the fantastic opportunity of undertaking the Legal Practice Course at the University of the West of England (UWE) through Distance Learning, enabling me to gain invaluable experience in practice whilst obtaining the necessary qualification.  Nalders have been extremely supportive of my studies including easing the financial burden by paying my course fees.”

Achieving a distinction, Melanie’s milestone in qualifying as a solicitor has further strengthened Nalders’ expanding employment and commercial department, headed by Dale Band.

Dale said, “Melanie illustrates that to qualify as a solicitor you clearly need a mix of dedication, hard work and ability over a number of years.  I am delighted that we have been able to retain post-qualification someone with Melanie’s ability and training in employment work.  She will be a huge asset to Nalders’ clients in an area of law that touches almost everyone at some time in their lives.”

Dynamic and constantly changing, Melanie is hooked on employment law, which provides her with an opportunity to work in both contentious and non-contentious areas of the law. Nalders act for both individuals and local businesses, and through her training Melanie has obtained an awareness for what the other side is thinking, which will help obtain a better result for her clients.

Melanie is looking forward to the future - continuing to develop ongoing relationships with clients and expanding Nalders’ existing client base.
