The name refers to the fact that bears ate the small red fruit which is extremely sour.Bear berry was first mentioned as a medical herb in the 13th. centuary, primarily for kidney and bladder problems. Bearberry is an important herbal medicine.

Bearberries was considered the best medicie for urinary infections till 1940s, when it was largely replaced by Sulpha drugs and anti biotics.In modern herbal medicine, however, bearberry remain useful in treating infectins and inflamation of the urinary tract.
CULTIVATION.
Bearberry grows well in cool surroundings, with sun dried well-drained soil in full sun and light shade.
Bearberry berries was important winterfood for many tribes.
