Facing this problem, many people would think of the Yellow Sea conflict between two countries in November last year. During that conflict, North Korean' patrol warship has been hit hard, which resulted in the death of one sailor. So, some people would believe that it's the main reason for North Korea to carry out revenge attacks on the Cheonan ship.

Some analysts pointed out that the conflict at Yellow Sea last year was a shame for North Korea. One of North Korea's experts said: "They didn't show very arrogant pose, but they were beaten."

Some others pointed out that the Cheonan ship incident caused the death of 46 South Korean sailors, but in the Yellow Sea conflict only one North Korea sailor was killed, which seem disproportionate. Moreover, most Korean people may have no knowledge of the Yellow Sea events. Of course, that North Korea will not release the news of that battle which they deemed as a shame.

Another explanation is that North Korean leader Kim Jong Il is making arrangements for the succession, as he had a stroke two years ago, which made his health deteriorate obviously.  He may felt unable to protect the son's position as heir at present. Therefore, he thought that it’s necessary to show his ability, so as to ensure his sun can succeed his position in near future.

Moreover, the failure of currency and market reform last year had led to riots in some area in North Korea, which may also push him to make the decision to attack the Cheonan warship, thus reduce the domestic pressure.
