New Transportation Program to Prisons Works to Keep Families Together

June 1, 2010 - PRLog -- June 1, 2010 (Atlanta, GA) - Young People Matter (YPM) and Blue Light Urban Express have partnered to provide low cost, transportation services for families who have loved ones incarcerated in Georgia’s adult and youth facilities.

The program, “Keeping Families Together” begins on June 5th and will transport passengers to adult state and federal prisons including Georgia State Prison, Arrendale (GA’s only female facility), Coastal State, Rogers, McRae and Jesup along with all of the Youth Detention Centers (YDCs).

One in 13 adult Georgians are behind bars and many of our youth are locked up in South Georgia while their families are located in the Atlanta metropolitan area. Many of them go without visits for months at a time. YDC officials state when youth do not have visits they are harder to manage.  “As far as we know, this is the first transportation program of it’s kind to provide an economical, safe and relaxing way for families to visit their loved ones. We believe it is a great way to help keep families together and assist in the rehabilitation of inmates,” states Simone Joye, Executive Director of YPM.  

Roundtrip costs average $60 per person and children are half-price. Buses will leave weekdays and weekends from Five Points and will also work with local transportation companies in Cobb, Clayton and DeKalb.
