By: Wayne Kessler Paola Rodriguez was born in Bogota, Colombia and migrated to the United States during her teenage years. She began her journey in psychology in South Florida and received a Masters of Science from Nova Southeastern University. Throughout her career she has worked with a broad range of populations by immersing herself in culturally and socially diverse environments. She has received certified training in multiple modes of therapy including CBT, Motivational Enhancement, couples counseling, and group therapies. She has also managed a wide variety of mental health issues, dealing with cases in child and adult realms of psychology, from the management of behavioral problems to posttraumatic stress disorder. In the past ten years of her career as a mental health counselor, Paola has been granted with the opportunity to work in a wide variety of settings. Her experience began with a position in the foster care field. This was followed by positions that involved providing individual, family, and group therapy. She also ran a day treatment program with dual-diagnosis clients. Paola has been a resident of Boston for the past four years, during which time she has shifted her focus to working in the management of trauma, grief and loss, as well as chronic mental health illnesses. She has also been able to enhance her knowledge in cross cultural psychology and school-based counseling. In addition, she has implemented a multi-disciplinary approach to her counseling, which has improved her ability to redefine problems outside of normal boundaries, reaching solutions based on a new understanding of complex situations. She has applied her skills within the community where she has focused her research on the people rather than the programs. She believes in an individualized approach to her counseling, and considers multiple dimensions of people’s real life experience to apply the appropriate mode of therapy for each person. Her variable experiences within the field of psychology have provided Paola with extensive knowledge and continued professional and personal growth. Paola’s approach to therapy is grounded on the belief that the client can change or modify aspects of their life that no longer accurately represent who they are or how they want to be perceived by others. She believes in empowerment, setting realistic expectations, and the infinite power of self-help and optimism.
