Mothers Just Don’t Understand Teenage Daughters

Boys, alcohol, sex, rape and pregnancy—all topics that mothers are familiar with. So why, when asked about these same topics by their teen daughters, do many mothers react as if it were their first time hearing of them? Hence, mothers have no clue.

May 26, 2010 - PRLog -- Most teenage girls truly believe that their mother does not have a clue.  A new book, Slumber Party by Sharon A. Myers, helps to illustrate how eerily moms know way more than they are telling.

Slumber Party is a fictional story that journeys into the lives of four teenage girls as they enter into and graduate from high school. The girls encounter many issues on the journey, which they try to handle among themselves. Friends since elementary school, reared in the church, they learn the hard way that life outside of the rules, hidden in secrecy, is more drama than they can handle alone.  Interestingly, their relationships with their mothers or lack thereof, influences their reactions to those issues.

“Aside from the fact that I was one, I worked with teenage girls for more than 20 years, so I have lots of experience on the topic,” states Sharon A. Myers, Author and Internet Talk Show Host of the Talking Out Loud Show.  “It always amazes me to learn how clueless teen girls believe their moms to be,” she said.  “Mothers need to let their daughters in on the secrets, so that their daughters will know that they not only have the clues, they have the rule book.”

Myers shared that while the book touches a wide variety of the social issues plaguing teen girls today, the book will not provide solutions without guidance and discussion.  If read together, Slumber Party can be used as an ice breaker for mothers and daughters to realistically examine the issues and to delve into deep and open discussions on how to tackle them when they arise.

“A group of ladies with teen daughters from my church are getting together with our daughters to read and discuss the book,” stated Doris Ray, a reader from Huntsville, AL.  “I think this is just what we needed to get the ball rolling.”

Danella Knight, a Slumber Party reader from Atlanta, GA writes, “My hat is definitely off to Sharon for her drive and dedication to breaking the cycle and the silence that is entrapping and enslaving our young women!”

“My goal was for this book to jumpstart conversations between mothers, daughters, and even grandmothers, about life—so as to break the silent cycle,” Myers added.  “Hopefully, after reading this book, mothers and daughters both will find it much easier to discuss some of the tough issues that young women are facing today.”

The book is available at most major online bookstores.
