Fieldwork Safety Training To Form An Integral Part Of University Health & Safety Provision

With hundreds of university students and staff undertaking off-site activities each year, fieldwork health & safety training is integral to university health & safety provision.

May 25, 2010 - PRLog -- The new USHA (universities safety & health association) fieldwork health & safety guidelines highlight dynamic risk assessment in the field as a key element of any fieldwork safety training. Risk assessment is often viewed as quite a dry and inaccessible subject, but when delivered by experienced and enthusiastic trainers using real life scenarios it can prove to be very engaging, and ultimately far more worthwhile: this is how Dom Hall of Fieldskills has been training university staff and students since 2008 in fieldwork safety, with huge success.

Fieldskills’ fieldwork health & safety training has ranged from consultations for a particular trip, seminars for senior staff on fieldwork planning and large packages covering field risk assessment, emergency management, first aid and environment-specific travel safety skills. Fieldwork health & safety sessions have been run over anything from two hours to three days and group sizes from 1 to 60 people.

Fieldskills is currently giving two free training events for university health & safety staff who wish to find out more about Fieldskills fieldwork safety, and the provision of such training within universities. These are being held at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, and University College London. The events aim to get university health & safety representatives and heads of departments discussing fieldwork safety training provision, provide advice for what training would be suitable for each university, and give a hands-on feel for what university staff and students gain from Fieldskills’ fieldwork safety training.
