Muscles cover the skeletal system which acts as the main framework of the body, and they move the body by contraction. Now, here are the different types of martial arts muscle, and some principles that you have to keep in mind when conditioning.

Agonists or prime movers are those muscles that contract to create the movement of a body part. Antagonists are those muscles that oppose the agonists and are responsible for returning the body part to its original position. Synergists assist the agonists in movement, and they help stabilize, control, and reinforce a movement so that it remains within a safe range of motion. Fixators provide support to a specific body movement by stabilizing the joint that is being moved. They prevent or minimize wobbling and loss of control of a movement.

When conditioning, you have to match your exercises to your weaknesses and needs. Although well designed strength training proves beneficial, you also have to consider your situation and to design your training to specifically address your weaknesses and needs. Start with general conditioning exercises and then progress to sport-specific ones. Also, you should build a strong muscular and skeletal structure first before attempting sport-specific strength and endurance exercises.

Before increasing resistance, you should develop flexibility first. This is because strength exercises generally use light loads that permit full range of motion first. Similarly, you have to develop the core of your body first before your extremities. This is because your limbs can generate only as much force as your trunk can transfer. Regardless of how strong your legs are, if your back is weak, then the forces generated by your legs will eventually damage your lower back if it is not strong enough to stay in proper alignment.
