May 18, 2010 - PRLog -- Servoy today announced the first open source version of its award-winning SaaS application development platform, Servoy 5.2 using PostgreSQL. This change means that Servoy users have enormous flexibility in deployment to cloud hosting or desktop systems. It also enables open source developers looking for RAD tools, rapid prototyping and data application development to utilize a mature, easy-to-use environment.

“With this open source release of the Servoy Developer and Servoy Client libraries, which now include Apache Tomcat, Java and PostgreSQL amongst others, Servoy hopes to spark contributions from talented developers worldwide and reaffirms its longstanding commitment to the open source community,” Aleman continued. “We strongly believe the future of software is open - and not only open as in open standards - but also open, as in open source.

Open source reduces vendor lock-in and increases the capabilities of both the developer and the platform. “In the past, Servoy has contributed to the Open Source community as a significant player in key Java projects, including Apache Wicket, Eclipse DLTK and others,” Aleman said. “We are taking this to the next level by open sourcing our Servoy Developer and Client code.”

Servoy expects to release the open source version as early as next month, after which the source code can be downloaded from the Servoy website.

The open sourcing of Servoy benefits the worldwide Servoy community:

- More extensive options for developers to take control
- Community driven improvements
- Hotfixes can be executed and applied immediately
- Innovative ideas can be shared/tested around the product
- Vast expansion of the Servoy eco-space
- Increased developer interest

“We chose PostgresSQL because it is the most powerful open source database,” said Jan Aleman, CEO, Servoy. “Users can also run other databases at the same time. We support Sybase, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, IBM DB/2, MySQL and others out of the box.” PostgreSQL has won praise from its users and industry recognition, including the Linux New Media Award for Best Database System and five time winner of the The Linux Journal Editors' Choice Award for best DBMS.

"We've used Servoy for years now, and we're really looking forward to many of the features in Servoy 5.2, particularly it now being open source,"said John Allen, Researcher, Stanford University and Hospital. "Best of all, Servoy has grown with us over the years and has always been future oriented, anticipating our development needs and concerns."
