May 14, 2010 - PRLog -- Award-winning Alaskan publisher and photographer Kathleen Menke announces the release of her new photo book "Spirits of the North--Two-legged, Four-legged, Winged, Finned, Rooted and Flowing."

This new book, her third, of Alaskan photographer Kathleen Menke will be available in early June of 2010 in book stores and gift shops throughout Alaska and the Pacific Northwest as well as online directly from the photographer at http://www.akmk.com

"I like all of Kathleen Menke's books but 'Spirits of the North"' is her best book yet," says Alan Traut docent for the Sheldon Museum and Cultural Center in Haines, Alaska.  "The theme of spirit is well-portrayed in this book."

The 80 page book contains over 200 original images of both people and nature across Alaska, the Yukon, British Columbia (BC), and the Northwest Territories (NWT).  Tombstone Park and the Dempster Highway north to Inuvik is featured in the book, as well as the Arctic, people and wildlife across Alaska.

Readers will discover individual spirits, family spirits, spirits of the Arctic, youthful spirits, traditional spirits, spirits of music and dance, spirits in bloom, spirits among the blooms, midnight spirits, and more.

"The more time I spend in the north and in the wilderness of the north, the more I perceive spirit in everything I see," says Menke.  "Those who live in the north, visit the north, or merely long for and love the north, have already formed their own connection with the spirits that reside here," says Menke in the introduction to her new book.  "This book is composed of images that portray spirits that have impressed me on my own personal journey through the regions of Alaska, the Yukon, British Columbia, and the Northwest Territories."

Menke's previously published photo books include "Haines for All Seasons--Northern Exposures from Alaska Reflecting Our Bond to the Land and Each Other,"  published in 2005, and her award-winning "Alaska/Yukon/Arctic Light--Gifts of the Wild," published in 2007.  Both have been best sellers throughout the Pacific Northwest.  Menke resides in Haines, Alaska.
