May 14, 2010 - PRLog -- New Delhi: The capital witnessed the hottest day of the year so far, when it recorded a maximum temperature of 44.4 degrees Celsius, four degrees above normal,on Thursday.Despite some clouds over brief periods through the day and light showers reported from certain parts of the city in the evening,Delhiites had to put up with sweltering heat and high levels of humidity.Thursdays maximum was also the highest temperature recorded in the city since 2006 when the highest went up to 44.5 degrees Celsius.

The minimum on Thursday was 25.9 degrees Celsius. The hottest area in the city was Palam where the maximum temperature went up to 46 degrees Celsius, followed closely by Ayanagar and the Ridge area which recorded 45.5 and 45 degrees Celsius respectively. The hottest place in northwest India was Jhalawar in Rajasthan which saw a maximum temperature of 46.2 degrees Celsius.

The Met department had been predicting a rise in temperatures around this time, attributing it to a western disturbance over the western Himalayan region. While the WD brought rain to Jammu and Kashmir and adjoining areas, its arrival caused hot southerly winds to blow over the plains of northwest India. However,we are not expecting any further rise in temperatures for at least a few more days, said B P Yadav, director,IMD.

Even though the city recorded the highest temperature of the year,Met officials have said that the average temperature of the month is not likely to be as high as it went in April. April was marked by an absence of any significant rainfall activity because of which there was no respite.May has already seen a slight amount of rainfall because of which the temperatures came down slightly, said an official.

The highest temperature that has ever been recorded in the month of May was 47.2 degrees Celsius in 1944.In the past decade, the highest recorded temperature in May was in 2002 with 46 degrees Celsius. On three occasions, the temperature touched 44.5 degrees Celsius, once each in 2006,2004 and 2001.

Since March 1,Delhi has recorded 4mm rain which is 31mm less than the average.Because of the WD affecting the western Himalayan region, isolated duststorms and thunderstorms are expected over Punjab,Haryana, western UP and Rajasthan.Delhi, too, may witness some amount of cloud cover over the next couple of days.
I returned home from school around 2pm and the heat was killing. Our school bus is not airconditioned and it is sheer torture to travel back in them in this heat.I am desperately waiting for the vacations to start, said Pratima Dwivedi,a school teacher.
