May 10, 2010 - PRLog -- The summer sun is back, earlier than ever this year! While it is the ideal time to take a dip in the pool, holiday on the beach and flaunt those cute floral dresses; heat, humidity and harsh sunlight can play havoc with your skin. UVA Rays lead to tanning, pigmentation and photo ageing, while UVB rays lead to sun burns.
Summer woes can be added to by increased production of natural oils leading to breakouts of acne.  It is also estimated that 90% of wrinkles are caused due to sun exposure. Additionally, there is increased incidence of prickly heat and fungal infections. So while we should be all about wearing our best summer attire and flaunting glowing, sun kissed skin, most of us go about hiding our skin in a poor attempt to protect it.
Follow these mantras by Dr. Sangeeta Amladi, Medical-Head, Kaya Ltd and bask in summer glory!
Cleanse the skin:
   The skin sweats more in summer hence increased dirt and grime. Wash the face with plain cool water every few hours.
   Cleansing is also of utmost importance, in order for grime and other pollutants to be removed completely from the skin. Kaya’s Soothing Cleaning Gel helps in deep cleansing without stripping away essential natural oils.  It also makes the skin look and feel fresh after use.

Toning and moisturising the skin:
   Toning helps to tighten the pores and prevents spots and pimples.  It is recommended as a part of one’s nightly skincare routine, after the face has been cleansed.  In intense heat, one can refresh the skin even several times a day with a chilled skin tonic, such as Kaya’s Daily Care Revitalizing Tonic.
   A must for healthy summer skin is to drink at least two litres of water a day.  Staying adequately hydrated flushes out the toxins and keeps the skin looking fresh.
   If the skin is dry to normal or stressed out by constant exposure to air conditioning make sure you apply moisturizer to the skin before heading out. Otherwise apply the moisturizer at night before bed time on a clean face.

Use sun protection:
   For Indian skin use a broad spectrum sunscreen with both UVA and UVB protection and at least SPF 15.  If on vacation or outdoors, usage of sunscreen with SPF 30 is highly recommended.  SPF only measures UVB protection and not UVA; hence one should look for a sunscreen that also provides UVA protection.  It takes about 15-20 minutes for any sunscreen to give out complete protection, so apply it at least 20 minutes before stepping out in the sun. The product should be reapplied every 3-4 hours, if one is outdoors for long periods of time.  Kaya’s Daily Moisturizing Sunscreen (available with SPF 15 and SPF 30) effectively combats the harsh effects of the sun.
   The sun’s rays are the strongest between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. so it is advisable to limit exposure to the sun as much as possible, during these hours.
   Use sunglasses to protect your eyes. Try using an umbrella when you go out in sun. This will protect your skin and your hair.
   Indian skin, especially the lips are prone to darkening and pigmentation. Do use a lip balm with sunscreen to prevent darkening.

Exfoliate your skin:
   At the start of the summer exfoliate your skin at least once a week to remove all dead cells and flakes left over from the winter. Exfoliate gently using micro beads as opposed to harsh exfoliation with larger beads as this can injure the skin and make it sun sensitive. After about 4– 6 weekly exfoliations bring it down to once in 2 weeks in the summer.

Shower tips:
   A cool water shower cools the body and skin temperature and retains oils and moisture in the skin. Don’t dry the skin roughly with towel. Gently pat it dry. Do leave some moisture on the skin so that when you apply the moisturizer the skin can absorb it fully and seal it in.
   Try and catch a shower twice a day, to feel cool and refreshed

Summer Diet Tips
   A light summer diet is recommended, to keep you feeling fresh and hydrated all season long.  Foods rich in Vitamin A aid in protecting the skin from the sun.  Foods with abundant Vitamin C help in repairing sun-damaged skin.  These vitamins can be found in vegetables and fruit including carrots, papaya, black grapes, and green leafy vegetables
   Water, freshly squeezed fruit juices, fresh lime water or soda, and light summer salads loaded with plenty of vegetables and fruit are all part of an ideal summer diet
   Don’t forget to drink at least 2 litres of water every day!
