How to Store and Preserve Wines at Home

May 9, 2010 - PRLog -- Storing wines at a constant temperatue at home can be challenging with fluctuations of temperature during summer and winter months.  A great way to store wines at a constant temperature is to store them in a wine refrigerator.

Wine refrigerators are designed for storing bottles of wine in a horizontal position.  This helps to preserve the quality of the wine and also prevents the corks from drying out.  Keeping your wine bottles upright can result in the cork to shrink overtime and allow exposure to oxygen resulting in oxidization and horrible tasting wine.  Wines should typically be kept at a consistent temperature at around 55-65 degrees farenheit with a relative humidity of 70% - 80% and out of the light.  Cool temperatures slows the aging process and conversely higher temperatures will speed up the aging process, preventing a wine from developing complexity over time.  Humidity levels over 80% can encourage mold whereas dry conditions may cause conditions of evaporation and exposure to oxygen.  Storing wine in darkness will allow the wine to retain its clarity whereas if the wine is exposed to light it can cause the proteins in the wine to react and result in bad tasting wine.
