May 8, 2010 - PRLog -- Anybody who loves original paintings starting from early 20th Century until contemporary art movements, must not miss this opportunity to view two contrasting, highly collectable artists who are being displayed for the first time in Artroom Gallery, both differing in style, each with his own solo exhibition.

The work of Frank Sully (1898-1992) is a unique, special collection of 20th century pieces with influences of art movements of his day including cubism, futurism, impressionism and abstract expressionism. These works are from a private collection for an exclusive selling exhibition called ‘Works of Living Artists’ running from 14th May until 4th July. Frank Sully began painting professionally in 1919 and then became a part of the profoundly significant BAE (British Artists Exhibitions) artists very early on, displaying all over the country with his contemporaries such as LS Lowry, Bridget Riley, Paul Nash plus many more. This led to international acclaim.

Colin Halliday (1964-present) is a collectable, modern, contemporary 21st century artist. Exhibiting since the late 1980’s, Colin was having one man shows even before he attended college. His landscape works reflect the power of nature in his own unique style that has even been compared to that of Turner and this is perfect, due to the historical relevance of Parkgate and the location of Artroom gallery, which was where Turner is believed to have painted his famous sunsets.

Colin’s canvasses evolve constantly in colour and subject matter. He explains “My work is based on my surroundings but it is not however bound by just that, but also the strong power of nature. One is drawn into the surface of my works and the beauty of the marks and application of paint and different influences within the landscapes”.

There is a strong local connection with Frank Sully as the 1920’s and 30’s millionaire art dealer, Sir Joseph Duveen (equivalent to Charles Saatchi today) was born in the northwest himself. Famous at the time for supporting then unestablished artists and promoting their works into the public eye both nationally and internationally, he exhibited their work so in the future many would become leading names. He was a strong believer that art was not just for the London-based collectors and was a great supporter of Sully’s works so that they appeared in many of the exhibitions in the provinces, including displays held in galleries such as the Walker in Liverpool, Ferens Art Gallery in Hull and the Whitworth in Manchester.

Before the 1st and 2nd World wars broke out, Sully’s work was shown on the prestigious Cunard Liners bound for New York. After the wars, his work was also represented with many solo and group exhibitions at prestigious London Galleries as well as appearing in collections worldwide including Canada, Peking and Australia. In this exhibition each period of his works can relate to an historical era.

Michelle Linger of Artroom Gallery is not just involved with the gallery but is also a working art historian and had a key role in investigating the new materials. She said, “Though Colin Halliday is a full-time contemporary artist and Frank Sully is no longer alive, it does not matter as the artworks continuously live into the next generation. They are living masterpieces of our English art history. The title of the exhibition is a pun, since it was that title that was originally used for all the Duveen exhibitions”. She continues “Both artists’ stunning paintings can be enjoyed wherever and whenever they are displayed”.

Both artists’ works take their progression with their palette in many different imaginative styles, each one having their own unique qualities in their works.

If ever artists’ works were breaking new ground, then this is a most exciting and inspiring exhibition yet. Time and history never stand still, as with these masterpieces Artroom continues to lead in a way no-one else can emulate. A must see exhibition!
