| Three Simple Ways To Reduce EarwigsNasty, vile, creepy and loathsome are just a few adjectives people use to describe the earwig. For some reason this harmless bug strikes fear and panic in many people and yet they continue to invite them in. Change 3 things in your home to stop them.
By: Jerry Schappert The Bug Doctor http://pestcemetery.com/ The pincers on the abdomen look fierce but are harmless except maybe to a smaller bug. Earwigs are omnivores and scavengers so they are constantly on the move looking for food which for their diet, is easy to find. Moisture however, may not be so easy to find and reducing their choices will go along way to keeping earwigs out of your home. The most ready source of water is a pet dish left on the floor, picking this up every night may not keep them out but will go along way toward their demise once they get in. Anything wet like laundry or wet boots or a leaky tub will sustain the earwig and they'll get along just fine until this precious source of life is dried up. Outside is of course a challenge to control moisture but you can reduce it enough to thwart the insect. Putting potted plants on stands keeps moisture from collecting and denies them a place to hide during the day. Welcome mats are famous for earwigs to gather under as it holds water as well and being that it is so close to the door you can see that they are only inches away from coming inside at anytime. There are many examples of places that hold moisture around a home but to reduce the earwig you just need to concentrate on the areas close to doorways, windows or cracks that could offer an entry way. Elevating or moving these items all together is a great way to re-route the earwig away from our home. Another great tip is to seal up your home with caulk or other suitable material. Check your doors and windows for cracks that may provide entry. Even the smallest crevices which may not seem big enough to you may be all this opportunistic bug needs to wiggle inside. Thresholds and sliding glass doors are the most common areas I find that earwigs enter and usually a potted plant or decorative statue holding moisture at its bottom is not to far away.
