May 7, 2010 - PRLog -- The Watchung Arts Center is proud to present "Inside Out: Portraiture Today", June 4-30, 2010.  Presenting a variety of artists working in this classic subject genre the exhibition will showcase over 20 works which use the face as a focal point for visual ideas. Co-curated by Paul Pinkman and Philip F. Clark, the exhibition will present viewers with a singular chance to ponder the question: "What's in a face?"

A portrait is the singular expression and mirror of our emotional, psychological, and personal identities. The face is the first key to our feelings, and the first impression that anyone has of us. Portraits are history as well as memory; using the face as inspiration, these artists fully take advantage of its extraordinary creative energies. The face is the physical surface that reveals everything inside. Or, keeps everything inside.

As a subject, portraiture is rich in interpretive ideas, and one of the most challenging of visual genres to master. From family snapshot to commissioned painting, a portrait is document, map, and milestone of who we are and how we are perceived -- artist, subject, and viewer alike. This wonderful combination of interactions will evoke the ultimate "face off" in this compelling new show and will present thought-provoking interpretations of the face in a broad range of styles, mediums and contemporary social, cultural and political contexts.

Some of the artists in this show will be Edwin Bethea, Lester Blum, Seth Ruggles Hiler, Will Holub, Jorge Larrea, Elspeth Meyer, Arsenio Garcia Monsalve, Michael Moran, Joseph Padial, Michael Skoglund, and Damian Stamer.
