May 5, 2010 - PRLog -- (Massapequa, New York) — The Community Parent Center will bring the highly acclaimed “Driving in the Safe Lane” program to the Massapequa Union Free School District and the Massapequa High School Parent-Teacher Association on May 10 at 7:30 p.m.  The 90-minute lecture program will be held at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus, located at Baltimore Avenue in Massapequa.  The event is open to the public. It is strongly urged that parents attend this program with their teenage children.

The program brings together police, a pediatrician and the mother of a teen driver who was tragically killed when driving with friends.  The program educates parents, new and prospective teen drivers about safety measures, New York State driving laws, and parental responsibilities.  Since the program’s inception, it has grown in popularity for its comprehensive approach and impact on those who attend.

Annually, Nassau County ranks among the highest in the number of fatal crashes for 16-19 year olds.  Between 2002 and 2006, 42 teens were killed on Nassau roadways.  Driving in the Safe Lane was launched in 2006 by the Community Parent Center in response to the growing problem of unsafe teen driving.

“Our goal is to save young lives through education and awareness.  Our message is that driving is a privilege and comes with great responsibility,” said Wendy Tepfer, Executive Director of the Community Parent Center.

Driving in the Safe Lane is funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration with a grant from the NYS Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. The Community Parent Center is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to providing parents and families with education, resource information, and the support they need to raise resilient children who are safe, confident, nonviolent, and drug free.
