May 5, 2010 - PRLog -- The UK’s leading discount code and voucher code site, www.MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, has conducted research and found that one fifth of Brits do not believe global warming actually exists. The site surveyed 1,678 members of the British general public to see what their thoughts were on the issue of climate change.

Of the 1 in 5 that thought that global warming was a myth, more than a quarter said they thought that it was a way for the government to control the way people live their lives. A third of those that said that global warming was a myth said that they didn’t see any effects of climate change yet.

Of the four fifths of people that believe that global warming does exist, 1 in 10, 9% say that they are fearful of its effects, whilst a quarter said that they were scared for the future of their children’s children.

Of the people that believe in global warming, just 43% said they have actively changed their lifestyle in a bid to lower their carbon footprint, with 38% suggesting that they were concerned but that it was ‘impractical’ to make lifestyle changes.

71% of people admit they could be doing more to prevent pollution at home, with more than a quarter of respondents, 26%, admitting they could cut down on the aerosols they used, with the majority of people that use natural gas to heat their homes, 64%, suggesting that they often leave their heating on throughout the day whilst nobody is at home.

More than two thirds of drivers, 69%, admitted that they regularly drove short distances where they could have otherwise walked.

Stuart McClaren, energy expert at MyVoucherCodes.co.uk said;

“I think that it is interesting that such a large number of people believe that global warming is actually a myth, despite evidence that suggests otherwise.”

He continued;

“I think that maybe the fact that whilst climate change has affected the weather in some ways, it has not been the dramatic and definitive proof that some people need to believe that global warming exists. Simple lifestyle changes, such as turning the central heating down even a notch, or walking or cycling where you would have otherwise drove short distances can make a huge difference to your carbon footprint.”
