May 5, 2010 - PRLog -- Latest research commissioned by www.rightmobilephone.co.uk has suggested that mobile phones enable people to be more abrupt than they are in person. More than three quarters of the 1,389 respondents admitted to being more confrontational on the phone than they would be when face to face with someone.

Of those that said they were more likely to be confrontational over the phone than they would be in person, 62% were women and 48% were male. When asked, ‘are you more likely to lie over the phone than you would be face-to-face?’ more than half, 57%, answered ‘yes’.

During the poll, the respondents were also asked who they were most likely to be rude to over the phone that they wouldn’t usually be confrontational to in person. 39% said it would be their parents that would feel the brunt of their phone rage, whilst 56% said it was often customer service advisors in call centres.

61% of the people that took part in the study were in a relationship and, of these, nearly a third, 27% said they argue with their partner more over the phone than in person.

Of the single people that took part in the research commissioned by http://www.rightmobilephone.co.uk, 74% said they were more flirtatious whilst texting a potential partner than they would be if they were actually with the person.

37% said they were more likely to raise their voice on the phone to someone than face-to-face and a quarter, 26%, claim they are more likely to swear over the phone or by text than they are in person.

86% of the respondents admitted to using a ‘phone voice’ regularly.

Neil McHugh, co-founder of http://www.rightmobilephone.co.uk, said;

“I think it’s a given that speaking over the phone gives you a different persona when compared to being face-to-face with someone else. It’s so much easier to be confrontational over the phone or in a text than it is when you are actually with someone.

“Call centre staff obviously bear the brunt of peoples’ “phone rage”, but I think that’s due to the fact most people ring up with a complaint of some sort. It would be interesting to see how they would execute their query if they were face to face with the person on the other end of the phone.”
