Mastery of Many Hats: Sarah Poindexter displays them all!

Sarah Poindexter is an independent filmmaker who has been writing, directing, and producing films for over 15 years. Several of her films have received national broadcasts on public television and have won prestigious festival and industry awards.
 
May 4, 2010 - PRLog -- With the many hats Sarah Poindexter displays, her array of work speaks for itself.  It ranges from comical, dramatic, satirical, and psychologically thrilling.  

Brainiacs in La La Land, (2010) Inspired by a true story: Brainiacs in La La Land portrays the journey of Hollywood director Amanda, played by Sarah Poindexter and her best friend Latina actress extraordinaire Elizabeth; referred to as Liz in the film and played by Aida Rodriguez.

The Greatest Song, (2009), Distributed by Image Entertainment: A successful music producer (Lamman Rucker, Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns) thinks he's got all the answers, but heaven help him when he meets an attractive church choir director (Aida Rodriguez). Sparks fly as the pair tries to save two imperiled churches of different ethnicities. Their only hope is helping the choirs join together to win first prize in a National Gospel Competition. In order to reach their goal, the choirs have to overcome racial tensions and learn how to work together if they're going to have a prayer of winning.  

Bushwacked, (2009) formerly known as "Umbweki: The adventures of” is a feature film bound to hit theaters soon. This super funny comedy features George W. Bush giving students a Black History Month lesson. The story he weaves is about Umbweki, who grew up in a small village in Africa, who after watching US television shows from the 70's, decides to travel to Hollywood to be a star.

Soulful, (2007) Distributed by Koch Entertainment: "Soulful" is a coming of age story of a young girl named Rachel nicknamed "Soulful" for her God given talent to sing. From childhood to adolescence, Rachel struggles with defining herself and her abilities while yearning for the truth about her family roots and eventually discovers a dreadful secret about her family's past and her own personal relationship with the devil, thus changing her life forever.

Conversation Piece, (2002) is a feature length independent thriller about a brilliant albeit failed novelist who gives up her career in exchange for marriage. But just when she thinks happily ever after is in her future, she finds out her life is in mortal danger. The film follows her as she tries to stay alive by figuring who wants her dead and ever scarier, why?

Sarah greatest achievement is her philanthropic spirit to give back to the youth.  She was awarded the Paul Robeson Fund grant to commence research for a youth media project that investigates public school reform.   “Sarah also collaborated with students from Scribe's Documentary History Project for Youth on a series of four short form documentaries for Scribe Video Center's Broad Street History Project, which used the city's main thoroughfare as a starting point.”

Sarah went on to produce three one-hour documentaries on race/ethnicity, sexual orientation and religion correspondingly for WYBE's Tolerance Project, an assessment of diversity and tolerance in nine different Philadelphia-area high schools.  She has also worked with the Balch Institute and openly gay teenagers to produce a half-hour documentary about how homophobia affects their lives.

Sarah’s success has also come in Hollywood where in 2000; she sold a feature length screenplay to Artisan Entertainment and produced The Source Hip-Hop Music Awards for the United Paramount Network (UPN). Sarah has produced and directed numerous documentary films including The Tolerance Project (as previous stated), which explored the way teenagers deal with issues of diversity. It was nominated for a Mid-Atlantic Emmy and received The National Telecommunications Award for best documentary series. It airs nationally on public television.

Sarah owns and operates a full service digital media production company, On The Reel, LLC that specializes in promotional videos.   She is also owner and operator of, “The Cinema Academy”, an online interactive workshop that allows students from around the world to learn filmmaking via the internet.  These classes include but are not limited to a scriptwriting workshop, documentary workshop, and micro-budget filmmaking.

Sarah received an M.F.A. in Film and Media Arts from Temple University in 1999.  Since receiving her degree, Sarah has been writing, producing or directing for both television (public and network) and film (Hollywood and independent).  No matter what genre Sarah works in, whether it is fiction or nonfiction, she has dedicated herself to telling stories that are often ignored by mainstream media.
