May 3, 2010 - PRLog -- Students of TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas have received highest national honors for their achievement in the study of Latin.

Newly inducted into the National Junior Classical League Honor Society are: Nick Anthony, Kendall Bohne, Jaclyn Bowes, Mario Cajic, Douglas Carter, Jonathan Clark, Gabriela Font, Drew Fox, Alex Hager, Falon Little, Alison Miller, Isabel Miller, Ren Osouli, Chris Pachulski, Stephen Santos, Collin Shinkle and Tyler Styles.

Members of the society are required to maintain an A average in a Latin course, to be a member in good standing of the National Junior Classical League and to exemplify good citizenship.

Earlier this year, TMI students were among more than 150,000 students who took the annual National Latin Exam, sponsored by the National Junior Classical League (JCL) and the American Classical League. More than half of the TMI students received recognition for excellence on the exam, which is taken by Latin course level.

In the Introduction to Latin course, Gabriela Font wrote a perfect paper; James Lawler and Isabel Miller each received a certificate of outstanding achievement; and Aaron Cornelius received a certificate of meritorious achievement. In Latin I, Jonathan Clark, Emily Kercheville, Falon Little and Blake Smithson received summa cum laude distinction; Harrison Conly and Katherine Smithroat, magna cum laude; and Philip Blair, Kendall Bohne and Jessica Watts, cum laude.

In Latin II, Stephen Santos received summa cum laude; Drew Fox, maxima cum laude; Kevin Nash, magna cum laude; and Douglas Carter, Brandon Dang, Emily Miller, Chris Pachulski and Zeph Parten, cum laude. In Latin III, Alex Hager and Hamilton Rogers received summa cum laude; Mario Cajic and Andrew Dove, maxima cum laude; Kirby Winstead and Colin Strong, magna cum laude; and Travis Bruni and Carson Hunter, cum laude. In Honors Latin V, Alison Miller received summa cum laude and Jaclyn Bowes earned magna cum laude.

“I am so very proud of our Latin students at TMI,” said Claudia Clark, Latin teacher and faculty sponsor of the school’s JCL chapter. “When you look at the National Latin Exam results for Texas in 2010 and compare our statistics to those of the entire state, 53 percent of our Latin students who took the exam were nationally recognized as opposed to 38 percent statewide. That is certainly a wreath of laurels that we can place on our Latin program and on the quality of students we have here.”

New members of the National JCL Honor Society and students who received distinction in the National Latin Exam were honored during a ceremony in TMI’s All Saints Chapel, where they received certificates for their achievement.

The National Junior Classical League is an organization of middle-school and high-school students, sponsored by the American Classical League and composed of local and state chapters. Its purpose is to encourage an interest in and an appreciation of the language, literature and culture of ancient Greece and Rome.
