Celebrating this day is a tradition in history that dates back nearly as far back as mothers themselves. In the past, many ancient cultures paid their tribute to their mothers as goddesses. In 1914, this day was recognized as a national holiday in the United States following a campaign by Anna Jarvis.

On Mother’s Day in Australia, children typically call their mother to wish her the best on this day and often times present her with gifts. This day used to focus mainly on mothers, but it is now dedicated to all women, including mothers, aunts, sisters, grandmothers, etc. Anna Jarvis was the first person to think of flowers on Mother’s Day as gifts to mothers. She gave 500 carnations to Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in West Virginia hoping they would be distributed to the mothers. Today’s tradition of sending flowers on this special today took root following this gesture.

Each year, millions of people around the world offer their mothers flowers containing poems and other gifts. Although, there are now many different choices of Mother’s Day gifts available, the tradition of flowers still hold a very unique place. There are an endless number of words for a mother and just one universal symbol that many use to show their love on Mother’s day- flowers. The most common Mother’s Day flower is a carnation, typically a white carnation. An arrangement of blooming roses is also sometimes used to thank a mother for her love and care. Although a carnation is traditional for this day, an arrangement of cheerful and bright flowers is perfect. Bouquets of spring flowers, including scented narcissi, tulips and daffodils are also favorites of many.

No matter what type of mother you are honoring on Mother’s Day, the gift we give is one that we all put a lot of thought into. You may be celebrating a new mother, a mother who has passed away or a mother figure; all are very important and need to be treated so on this special day.
