April 27, 2010 - PRLog -- Avenue Pink, New York Urban League Young Professionals (NYULYP), Bronx Knows and Nexus Brands LLC Advanced Juice team up to co-host the "Get Your Mind Right, Body Right," a teen and young adult edutainment health expo at St. Mary’s Park (Bronx, NY) on Saturday, May 1, 2010 (12-4 p.m.).

Answering the call to action, Avenue Pink teams up with the New York Urban League Young Professionals (NYULYP), Bronx Knows and Nexus Brands LLC Advanced Juice to bridge the health education gap among young adults in the Bronx, New York. The "Get Your Mind Right, Body Right" agenda was prompted by the explicit rise of disproportional health issues among Bronx teens due to lack of knowledge and resources, as evidenced in recent reports.

According to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (2nd edition, 2006, www.nyc.gov/health), more than 1 in 4 adults (28%) are obese, which is 40% higher than in New York City overall (20%) and in 2003-4, statistics have shown that the death rate due to cancer is 15% higher in the Central Bronx than the rate in NYC overall (185/100,000 vs. 185/100,000 in the Bronx and 161/100,000 in NYC). Also, Bronx residents are more likely to experience serious psychological distress than those in NYC overall (10% vs. 6%).

The day of health education and entertainment specifically focus on raising awareness of health epidemics plaguing the community, disease prevention means, local and affordable health resources, mental and physical health. Emphasis will be on HIV prevention, contraception, diabetes prevention, asthma, depression, smoking cessation, healthy diets and fitness.

Sponsors for this event include Nexus Brands LLC., NYC Health, City of New York Parks and Recreation, Pfizer, Riviera Produce, Aquafina and Avenue Pink.
