Award Winning Student Entrepreneur Starts Innovative Loupe Business

If you are a student of dentistry in the UK, you may feel frustrated at the lack of affordable, quality dental loupes available on the market. According to the Journal of Dental Hygiene, “loupes are a vital tool” for all dental healthcare professionals. Even the Chief Executive of the British Dental Association, Peter Ward, recognises that dental loupes “make treatment easier and improve posture”. So where can a dental student get affordable, quality dental loupes?

In April 2009 Dave Stone acknowledged this problem by founding UKloupes, a company that aimed to close the gap in the market by providing superior dental magnification loupes at a price that doesn’t break the dental student’s bank.
Dave, a fourth year student at Cardiff Dental School, has since seen a rapid growth in sales for the company, which is quickly establishing a reputation for providing affordable quality. In fact, UKloupes has been so successful that, less than one year later, it is now the leading dental loupe provider in Cardiff Dental School.
Despite being such a young company, UKloupes has amassed a growing number of awards including the Santander Business Award 2009, SPARK Business Award 2010, Shell  Grand idea award winners 2010 and Dave was recently shortlisted for the Shell LiveWIRE Young Entrepreneur of the year awards 2009.

Together with fellow entrepreneur, Daniel Keil, Dave has already begun plans to expand the business into a further 15 dental schools across the UK very soon.
“The popularity of our loupes within Cardiff has spread by word of mouth, making our marketing process a lot easier. It’s great to hear the students’ positive feedback”, said Dave.

It’s not just word of mouth either – UKloupes has been featured in various important media publications, such as Launchpad, the British Dental Association student magazine and Dental Protection promotional material.
Dave first approached Venture Wales, which is supported by the Welsh Assembly Government, for support in developing strategic and promotional marketing activities directed at the 16 dental schools in the UK. Since then it has been a whirlwind of success, with the first 2 months of trading this year showing promising results for the rest of 2010 – that’s in addition to the keen interest shown by other European dental schools in Lithuania and Spain.

With demand for their product growing more and more every day, 2010 should prove to be a very busy and exciting year for UKloupes.
