Churchill War Rooms marks 70th Anniversary of Churchill as Prime Minister

April 22, 2010 - PRLog -- Just days after a General Election in the UK the Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms commemorates the 70th anniversary of Churchill becoming Prime Minister on 10 May 1940.  On the same day the CWR launches a change of its name to Churchill War Rooms.

On 10 May a new Churchill photographic ‘deepzoom’ will also be launched in the Churchill Museum, at the Explore History gallery at Imperial War Museum London and via the Museum website. This innovative online gallery mosaic is a composite of hundreds of Churchill images and includes documents, information……..and some surprises too.
The popular exhibition, Undercover: Life in Churchill’s Bunker has been extended until the end of 2013.  In this exhibition, visitors will discover first-hand personal accounts from those who worked in the Cabinet War Rooms during the war, adding a further dimension to experiencing the emotional resonance of walking through the very corridors where Churchill made history.

During any event held at the Churchill War Rooms, guests will have the opportunity to look around the historic site and the Museum and immerse themselves in the atmosphere of this once secret underground wartime bunker.

Team Building Activities at the Churchill War Rooms
The constant echoes of the site’s principle resident, Winston Churchill, make the Churchill War Rooms the perfect venue for team building activities.  All sessions are customised to the group’s needs and can be used to enhance a meeting or a conference.  A brand new list of affordable and easy to prepare activities includes “Action This Day”, “Codes and Spies” and “Chain of Command”.    

“Action This Day” presents an opportunity for brainstorming and creativity.  Teams taking part in the activity have a limited time to explore their area of the site to identify how Churchill and those who worked in the Cabinet War Rooms demonstrated their skills of initiative, enterprise and leadership during the Second World War.  

“Chain of Command” is a fast and fun activity with participants taking on roles f
rom the historic functions at the Cabinet War Rooms.  The session concludes with an opportunity for participants to reflect on their experiences and on what made teams more or less successful.  

“Codes and Spies” offer groups the opportunity to work in the area surrounding the Churchill War Rooms, particularly St James’s Park.  Teams are briefed and then provided with task sheets to discover the clues and crack the mystery.  The session ends with sharing experiences and evaluating the experience of working as a team.  

Activities typically cost £16 + VAT for per person and last a minimum of 60 minutes.
History of Churchill War Rooms

The Churchill War Rooms, located by St James's Park, is arguably one of the most historically important sites in the modern era.  The Cabinet War Rooms were created in 1938, as the underground storage areas of the Office of Works Building in Whitehall were converted to house the central core of government and to become a military information centre, serving the Prime Minister and the Chiefs of Staff of the air, naval and land forces. Intended as a temporary site, the rooms became operational on 27 August 1939, a week before the German invasion of Poland and Britain's declaration of war. This 'temporary' but timely measure served as the central shelter for government and military strategists for the next six years.
The award winning Churchill Museum, opened in 2005, uses cutting-edge technology and multimedia displays to bring the exciting story of Winston Churchill to life. From Churchill’s childhood to his ‘finest hour’ and later years, visitors not only learn more about his political exploits but also his private life, successes and failures.

Housed within the Museum, admission to the Churchill Museum is included with tickets to the Churchill War Rooms.
