Leonie the heroine of this novel is born and educated in Mangalore, a South Indian City. She is a victor; throughout her school, college and working life. But her married life is a complete fiasco. After the demise of her father, in order to liberate her illiterate mother and five siblings from all peril and woe, she moves to Bombay. Facing all odds, she falls prey to a flamboyant young lad named Solomon Rebello and becomes a victim of his false affection. She marries him and moves to Bahrain to set in motion her married life. After Solomon looses his Job in Bahrain, they reposition themselves in Abu Dhabi, an oil rich capital of the United Arab Emirates, a Middle Eastern country. After the mysterious death of their daughter, not wanting to loose their only son, the couple sends him to US for his under graduate degree. His attachment to the place is so much, even though he is unemployed; he refuses to come back or even to have any connections with them. Leonie is gripped by loneliness and failing to put-up with the tantrums of the male protagonist, her husband, who is influenced by his grandmother's philosophy and is under her petticoat government. At the age of fifty, where one begins to pray for a most holy, happy and peaceful death, she finds her other man, an Iraqi, Roman Catholic and elopes to Canada, a country open to immigrants.
