April 21, 2010 - PRLog -- A New York City union representing 30,000 doormen reached an agreement with building owners early Wednesday morning on a new contract and, in the process, quelled a strike that would have impacted roughly one million people in apartments throughout the city, according to The Wall Street Journal.

A four-year deal was struck between the two parties — SEIU's 32BJ and the Realty Advisory Board — involved in the contract negotiations that wrapped up shortly after midnight Wednesday, WSJ reports.

There hasn't been a strike in the city for nearly 20 years, WSJ reports, when the group refused to work and waited 12 days for an improved deal.

This round of negotiations centered on "givebacks," which are benefits the doormen had in the original contract that was about to expire that the RAB wanted given back in the new one, WSJ reports. The RAB had wanted the doormen to contribute additional money to their healthcare plans as well as lengthen the time it takes before health benefits coverage begins, the newspaper reported.
