Will kids or teenagers who follow a strictly vegan diet receive enough vitamins and supplements? Some authorities believe that the risks of nutritional related diseases like rickets outweigh any perceived benefits that such an eating plan can bring.

Some local authority social workers in London recently attempted to remove a 5 year old boy into state care because they thought he had developed rickets and vitamin D deficiency as a result of the diet the parents had given him. Vitamin B12 deficiency can also be a big issue.

The parents went to court and have stopped this going ahead but the debate has continued.
