April 16, 2010 - PRLog -- Encinitas, CA,----The Grauer School welcomed actor Richard Dreyfuss on Friday, April 9, 2010, as he attended civic classes in conjunction with his efforts to advance the mission of the Dreyfuss Initiative.  Dreyfuss, a neighbor of the school, debated the merits of public versus private education as well as the proper role of ethics in the schools, with the Senior class.  Dreyfuss defined civics for the students as “opposing views.”  The actor is touring the country challenging students to “understand the running of the country better than you do now.”  He cautioned Grauer School students against the “toxic partisanship” that tends to take over governance at all levels “when the players are concerned fundamentally with self-interest.”

Dr. Stuart Grauer explained,  “The Grauer School, as a grass roots organization, wholly endorses The Dreyfuss Initiative and it’s goal to inspire all students to understand not just how our amazing form of government developed, but why it developed.  I’d like to challenge all institutions to get back to their roots:  America started out as a government for the people just as our schools started out as a school for the students—unfortunately as organizations grow these founding purposes can become buried too deeply.  Our School exists to restore the time for reflecting, debating, and connecting with life’s larger purposes.”

The Dreyfuss Initiative is a nonprofit corporation formed to revive, elevate and enhance the teaching of civics in the U.S.  The primary objectives of the organization are to revitalize the instruction of civics and power in American classrooms, create an enhanced American discourse on civics and power through lectures and speaking engagements with a variety of constituents, to conduct seminars and conferences to “teach the teacher” and implement unique teaching and presentation opportunities.  For additional information, visit www.thedreyfussinitiative.org.
The Grauer School is located at 1500 South El Camino Real in Encinitas and scholarships are available.  Grauer seniors take a semester of civics as a graduation requirement.  For additional information, call (760) 944-6777 or visit www.grauerschool.com.
