Joan Ruddock Joins African Dance Class at IRIE! dance theatre's Family Learning Open Weekend - FLOW

Joan Ruddock gets into the “FLOW” at IRIE! dance theatre's Family Learning Open Weekend at the local Moonshot Community Centre.

April 16, 2010 - PRLog -- Joan Ruddock, Labour MP for Lewisham, recently attended IRIE! dance theatre’s Family Learning Open Weekend (FLOW) event where she took part in an African Dance Workshop.

This is the second year running that IRIE! dance theatre has hosted FLOW.  It's an event designed to draw the community into Moonshot Centre, where the company is now based so that family members can take part in fun learning activities based on African and Caribbean dance, music and culture.

In addition to the African Dance Workshop, other activities included Caribbean Dance Workshops, Drumming Workshops, Storytelling and Mask-Making.  On the Sunday, there was even a Caribbean-style lunch.  The activities were generally designed so that the whole family could get involved.

And most of the workshops were taught by members of IRIE! dance theatre's pool of experienced tutors who teach community as well as professional dance and music classes on behalf of the company locally, nationally and internationally.

The event was attended mainly by people from the London Borough of Lewisham.  However, the event also attracted individuals from other boroughs as well, even as far as North London.

Beverley Glean, IRIE! dance theatre's Artistic Director said:

"It's always a pleasure to have Joan Ruddock attend our events.  She has been an avid supporter of IRIE! over the years.  It's also great to be able to interact with the local community and individuals who have travelled from further afield in this way. I wish we could host events like this more often."

This year FLOW also provided a platform for another of IRIE! dance theatre's projects IRIEAdults.  IRIEAdults is the name given to a dance project specifically for adults for which funding for the pilot project came from the People's Postcode Trust.  The IRIEAdults group performed at FLOW.  It was the first time that many of these adults had ever performed in this way (http://www.IRIEAdultsDance.org).

The Family Learning Open Weekend was funded by the London Borough of Lewisham.
