April 15, 2010 - PRLog -- The first thing most people recall when Macy’s is mentioned is the Thanksgiving Day parade. This 150 year old retail chain is known for the luxurious and expensive nature of the products its sells and shopping at Macy’s is a serious, and usually satisfying, experience. But that does not mean that there is no fun to be had. So here are some fun facts about Macy’s that will give you a better idea of where you are doing your shopping for quality products.

Fun Facts

The Macy’s logo – the star – is supposed to come from a tattoo that the founder, Rowland Macy, had done as a teenager while working as a seaman.

Macy’s Herald Square store in New York was one of the first establishments in the US to install an escalator. That was way back in 1902.

The Herald Square store is a National Historic landmark.

Rachel Ray, of TV, cooking and writing fame got her first job working at Macy’s candy counter.

Although the Thanksgiving Day parade is what everyone associated Macy’s with, the company also sponsors the annual 4th of July fireworks display in New York City.

The Parade balloons take six hours to inflate and are done the night before the parade. Some of the larger balloons require 50 people to hold them down.

Shopping Tips

Macy’s is known for quality and high end retail shopping. Obviously these are not stores where you will get bargain basement prices. But that does not mean that getting bargains is impossible. The firs thing to do is keep an eye out for advertised sales and make the most of them. The next, and equally obvious tip, is to use the Macy’s website to look for special offers and deals. In many cases the regular online prices are lower than the store ones because of the savings in overheads the company achieves by selling online.

Macy’s has its sales, but often these are deliberately not well publicized. Macy’s does not want to be known as a discount store. But if you have a network of friends who shop there with some frequency, you can set up a grapevine whereby you will be able to get news on the sales and special offers. And the savings, on the high end products that Macy’s sells, can often be really large.

A very important tip is to go shopping at Macy’s with some friends. Having different people spend time searching different departments to look for sales and specials offers. Spare a whole morning of afternoon for this and keep in touch with each other at fixed intervals by cell phone so that when one person spots something interesting the rest of you will know where to go.

Also, there’s nothing like an insider. If you can find someone working at Macy’s, he or she will be able to tell you about the special prices that may be available for only short periods. There’s nothing wrong with this. You are not asking for a special discount or anything like that – you are only asking for advice on when you should shop.
