April 14, 2010 - PRLog -- “I mean a great shot is when you pull it off.  A smart shot is when you don’t have the guts to try it.  I kept saying that if I trust my swing, I’ll pull it off.”  - Phil Mickelson, Masters Champion, Augusta 2010

That statement by 2010 Masters Champion Phil Mickelson exudes the highest level of confidence and hypnosis like focus any athlete can display. He was, of course, referring to his magnificent though somewhat daring play from out of the trees on the 13th hole that “shocked and awed” the entire gallery and legion of press reporters.

Phil could see a shot that nobody else could see.  Nobody really thought that he should or would play the ball the way he did.  Anything but a safe lay up would be a huge gamble.  But that was not the shot Mickelson saw in his mind. This is the sports psychology mind set of a champion. He calmed himself, honed his focus, and took the shot.  The ball missed the trees and landed on the green 3 feet from the cup just as he had planned.

Phil Mickelson “saw” the execution of that play in his mind before he ever took the swing.  He could see it, he could feel it, and it all played out exactly as he intended.  How did he do that?  He said it himself.  He said if he trusted his swing, he’d pull it off.  And so he did, much to the amazement of all who saw it.  Phil Mickelson trusted his swing.  He trusted his skills and ability.  Phil had the utmost confidence in himself.  There was no doubt in his mind that he would make that incredible shot.

Throughout the tournament coaches and reporters kept saying that Phil Mickelson was playing aggressively.  I say, Phil Mickelson was playing with confidence.  For him to play with that amount of confidence and focus on his golf game was an incredible feat in and of itself considering all the other issues weighing on him in his personal and family life.  I believe to exhibit that level of confidence under that amount pressure is a sure sign of a true champion.  He earned his win.  He earned his jacket.

A while back Phil was quoted as saying “mental rehearsal is just as important as physical rehearsal.”   He indicated that it’s a matter of having your mind and your body in sync with the focus directed toward one visual goal.  And that’s the way to play better golf.
That gives us a great deal of insight into the power behind the “mental game” of a champion athlete.  The utilization of confidence, belief, focus, and visualization are more critical to an athlete’s game than their physical fitness and their equipment.  An athlete, no matter what the sport, can have all the right equipment, be physically trained to use it, but without confidence and focus and mental training techniques, their performance will most likely be nothing more than average.

True excellence and champion status in any given sport comes only after the mind is conditioned and trained along with the body.  These are the keys that will lead to a winning game:
*   Self confidence
*   Self belief
*   Focus
*   Visualization
*   Emotional control
