Velindre Cancer Centre rolls out digital dictation with G2 Speech

Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff, one of the 10 largest oncology centres in the UK, has begun implementation of MediSpeech digital dictation across all its services. Working with system specialists G2 Speech, the Centre aims to roll out its modernised approach by May 2010.

A faster turnaround

“We evaluated four different digital dictation systems through our tendering process,” explained Alison Mackie, Project Manager at Velindre Cancer Centre. “We considered cost, quality, past experience and integration with our system. G2 Speech came out on top. Their MediSpeech system does everything we want, plus it has the added benefits of a comprehensive and extensive reporting system.

“We are very excited about the project and already have medical secretaries who are confidently predicting turnaround of reports in less than a day. We envisage that priority reports which have been dictated at our out-reach clinics, for example, could be typed up and ready for consultants to sign off immediately on their return to Cardiff.”

Velindre provides specialist cancer services to over 1.5 million people living in South East Wales and beyond and, with 5,000 new cancer referrals and around 50,000 new outpatient appointments each year, the secretarial and administrative function is extremely busy. The choice of reports that can be generated by the new G2 Speech system will help the Centre monitor its reporting and documentation, helping to identify when and where extra resources may be needed.

Greater efficiency

The twin goals for the project are to modernise technology for the Centre’s clinicians and secretarial service and to create a more efficient service for patients, according to Alison Mackie. “We’ve seen G2 Speech in action at Bristol and elsewhere. Velindre Cancer Centre's commitment to cancer care can only be enhanced by using this modern, flexible technology. With analogue tapes, reports can potentially take several days to be completed and there is always a risk of lost or damaged tapes. Now patient information will be more readily available to all those involved with the care pathway.”

Velindre Cancer Centre was established in April 1994 and plays an important role in training health professionals in cancer care and treatment. An electronic patient record (Canisc) has been in use at the Centre since 1997. Following the roll-out of digital dictation by G2 Speech, regular monitoring and review will help to benchmark performance efficiencies. The addition to the system of speech recognition software may be considered in the future.
