By: UCM Production New Album: ELIXIR In 2009, as she worked on an advanced masters degree related to the structural analysis of historical buildings in Italy and Spain and toured old churches and cathedrals, Mircan penned songs that voiced her longing for Istanbul, the beloved city she found herself so far away from. What’s more, she employed the poems of the great Turkish poet Gülten Akın. She has once again captured a unique and distinct flavor by adding sounds we know but with a distance, foreign flair to the songs that flowed out of her daily experience as she listened to the bells echoing off of old, moss-covered brick walls. They affectionately bid us to listen. With the music she created as she wandered around centuries-old buildings, she describes for us the beauty of growing old, aging and becoming moss covered in a voice that is sweet and familiarly mature but does not grow old. She talks about lace curtains on faded wooden frames blowing in the wind, lights with double covers on the balcony and the lovers who are expected to return. She describes a bleeding Istanbul, a suffering Istanbul, the young people groaning on the sidewalks, their bloody faces and the impassable look on our faces… As one of our own, Mircan views us from the outside. She wrote most of her songs in Padova, in a house that overlooks a real witch tower with a river flowing beneath it and with a view of "Specola", the house where Galileo conducted his studies in astronomy. Others she wrote flying above the clouds on the way to distant lands. Now, she sings about brand new things with the distinctive sound she has created on every album by combining distinctively talented foreign musicians with Turkish masters as she strives to achieve universality while holding on to native identity. . Once again she embarked on this journey with recognized masters. Roger Mills-trumpet, Göksel Baktagir-kanun, Yurdal Tokcan-oud, Baki Kemancı-violin, Cenk Erdoğan & Aydin Can Kutluay- guitar, İzzet Kızıl & İsmet Kızıl- percussion and many other musicians besides. The sentiment and spirit of every poem is reflected in music Mircan wrote especially for them. Mircan’s album was once again created via an international exchange with musicians living abroad during the recording and mixing & mastering stages. The first album she put out was Bizim Ninniler (Our Lullabies), a first of its kind, which was followed by her other international collaborative albums Kül (Ashes), Sala, Numinosum and OUTIM - Once Upon a Time in Mingrelia. Mircan Kaya, who lives now for the most part in Istanbul, but has her roots in Mingrelia (in what is now the independent Georgia), has become increasingly well known in recent years for her distinctive music; but she brings to the Turkish cultural scene and to the World Music genre much more than her music.
