Barcelona beat Real Madrid again in El Clasico

Real Madrid’s run of 12 consecutive league wins came to an end tonight at the Bernabeu Stadium as their fiercest rivals Barcelona, took all three points and the La Liga leadership.

April 10, 2010 - PRLog -- Another masterful midfield display from Xavi helped clinch a 2-0 win for Barcelona in “El Clasico” putting them three points clear at the top, in a title race that has been neck-a-neck for weeks.

With 33 minutes on the clock, Lionel Messi scored his 40th goal of the season and 27th in the Spanish league, when he chested down a pass from Xavi over the top of the defence to score with his right foot before the ball touched the ground.

In the second half 22-year-old Pedro Rodriguez escaped past Arbeloa to receive another exquisite through ball from Xavi and curl the ball past Iker Casillas at 55 minutes.

Just a few seconds before Barca’s second goal, Cristiano Ronaldo the Portugal captain and Real Madrid star, had a good chance of drawing the game but keeper Victor Valdes who had a magnificent night, saved with his boot. Had the ball gone in, the destination of the Spanish title could have been a whole lot different.

Real Madrid pressured till the end, but it was Pep Guardiola’s team with the magic of Xavi and Messi, that almost scored a third goal, carving the Merengue defence open and demonstrating that the gap at the top of the table is a matter of class, not just points.

Today’s game was proof that all those millions don’t win games. Real Madrid were disjointed and lacking ideas as they frustrated their home fans, who were hoping to break Barcelona’s stellar rise in the Spanish and world game and to get revenge on last season’s 6-2 drubbing that Barca inflicted on Real in this same stadium.

This was Barca’s 4th straight win against the Merengues in their encounters since last season. With this loss Real have seen their €300 thousand investment go up in smoke as they were eliminated prematurely in the Copa del Rey and the Champions League.
At the end of the game Pellegrinni conceded “We were defeated by a team that, at the moment are superior to us”

Cristiano Ronaldo couldn’t hide his disappointment at the 0-2 defeat at home, but reminded that there are still lots of games ahead and Real can still be champions. “Tonight Barcelona was more efficient” admitted Cristiano.

Barcelona, the Spanish and European Champions now have 70 points to Real’s 67, with seven games left to play.
