April 8, 2010 - PRLog -- May is Melanoma Awareness Month -
Riverchase Dermatology is offering Free Skin Cancer Screenings in Southwest Florida as a public service.

As a service to the local community, Riverchase Dermatology is once again offering free skin cancer screenings at their Fort Myers, Naples and Cape Coral locations. The month of May is National Melanoma Skin Cancer Awareness month. Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer and also one of the most preventable and treatable. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer and is on the rise in the United States, especially among young people. In fact, melanoma is now the most common form of cancer for young adults 25-29 years old. The American Cancer Society recommends a skin cancer checkup as part of any periodic health examination for men and women over twenty.

The providers and staff of Riverchase Dermatology invite members of the community to participate in the screenings for the prevention and early detection of skin cancer. The screenings will be offered by appointment only to anyone who is not currently a patient of Riverchase Dermatology at the following dates and locations:

May  4th – Cape Coral Location – 1425 Viscaya Parkway – 239-443-1500

SYMPTOMS OF SKIN CANCER
•   A small lump (spot or mole) that is shiny, waxy, pale in color, and smooth in texture.
•   A red lump (spot or mole) that is firm
•   A sore or spot that bleeds or become crusty. Also look for sores that don't heal.
•   Rough and scaly patches on the skin.
•   Flat scaly areas of the skin that are red or brown.
•   Any new growth that is suspicious

If you suspect that a lump, spot, or mole may be suspicious of skin cancer, see your doctor. When detected early, skin cancer is highly treatable.
