Polar Ark - the Wildlife of the Sub Antarctic island of South Georgia

April 6, 2010 - PRLog -- A stunning exhibition of the Wildlife of the Sub Antarctic island of South Georgia was officially opened at Verdant Works Exhibition Gallery on Thursday 8th April.  This exhibition is a joint venture between Katherine Snell and the South Georgia Heritage Trust who promote for the public benefit, the conservation and protection of the physical and natural environment and surrounding waters of South Georgia - and advance the education of the public in the island's historical heritage.

Katherine Snell, a Scottish Wildlife photographer and polar biologist, felt extremely privileged when she sailed to South Georgia to study and photograph it’s wildlife.  South Georgia is extremely mountains and over half of the island is glaciated. However it is a haven to extraordinary wildlife; beaches crowded with breeding seals and penguins, and great albatrosses cruising the skies above. Katherine was amazed and humbled by the spectacular scenery and abundance of wildlife and this exhibition depicts the beauty of South Georgia.

Katherine said ‘I am delighted to be able to share the unique beauty of South Georgia through a collection of photographs taken during the month long expedition to South Georgia. The diversity and sheer numbers of wildlife, many of which are endangered, makes South Georgia an incredibly special place. It was an enormous privilege to be able to sit amongst the wildlife on the sun warmed sand, surrounded by curious penguins.  One day I climbed above the snowline to a secret lake where I watched two pure white snow petrels flit between the dark rocks of the ridge. Life on this island was inescapable. I hope visitors to Verdant Works will be as inspired and delighted by this remarkable island, as I was.’
