April 5, 2010 - PRLog -- If you are reducing, reusing and recycling for Earth Day, why not also take the time to make a musical instrument?  If you do, you can enter a contest and possibly win a real Washburn guitar, a talking drum or shekere from Africa.  The Earth Day contest runs throughout the month of April and is hosted by five-time award-winning children's artist – DARIA.  Complete rules, ideas and suggestions can be found on Daria’s website which won a 2009 Parent’s Choice Award as a best place for kids to check out world music on the web -  www.dariamusic.com.

“Most of the first instruments in the world were made from recycled materials” says Daria whose live world music show features instruments from across the planet such as didgeridoos from Australia made from hollow tree branches, gourd shekeres from Africa and goat toe-mail rattles (chapchas) and donkey jawbone percussion (quijana) from South America.  Says Daria:  “Getting creative with music is something that any kid can do and I hope my world music instruments, my website and this contest inspire them to be creative about how they can make their own unique music”.

First prize for this contest is a real Washburn “Rover” travel guitar and case.  “It’s a small, great sounding guitar perfect for a travel instrument or a first guitar.”  Says Daria, “I’ve taken this model of guitar on the road in rugged travel to places such as Peru and it has held up beautifully.  Second prize is a talking drum from Ghana covered with hand-woven fabric.  Third prize is a beautiful large shekere that looks very similar to the instrument held in Daria’s hand on her homepage. Lucky runner-ups will also win Daria T-shirts and cd’s.
Along with two Parent’s Choice Awards and one NAPPA award, Daria's cd’s have won acclaim for creating a kind of multicultural kids music that is heard and enjoyed around the world from South Africa to South America as well as throughout the USA.

The Earth Day MAKE A RECYCLED INSTRUMENT – WIN A GUITAR contest is open to any child up to the age of 12 anywhere in the world.  They are to make any kind of musical instrument and send a picture and a short description to Daria’s website (dariamusic@yahoo.com).  Pictures and updates on prizes and submissions will be posted regularly on the DARIA MUSIC Facebook Fanpage.  Exact rules and also Daria’s free songs for April can be found at: http://www.dariamusic.com/monthly_song.php.
