April 4, 2010 - PRLog -- 4 Key Components to Great Video Resumes

You’ve just graduated from college. Now what? With the degree in your back pocket, you need to prepare yourself for your first job. The best way to get it? Video resumes. Everyone needs an edge in this competitive marketplace. Yours could be making a stunning video resume that convinces an employer that they need to meet with you.

One of the best things about video resumes is that they showcase both your professional and personal strengths. In a couple of minutes you can tell an employer everything it needs to know, from your experience to your relevant skills to the way you present yourself, to show why you’re the perfect candidate for the job.

It’s all about getting past the gatekeeper. Job seekers who impress the gatekeepers with resume videos have a much greater chance of getting a face-to-face interview. That’s when your talents and personality can really shine.

But first things first. Here are four ways to make the best impression in video resumes:
1. Be Prepared: Preparation is key. What are your talents? What do you need to communicate? What sets you apart? Video resumes can actually hurt your cause if you aren’t properly prepared, so make sure you know what you want to communicate—both verbally and visually—before the camera starts rolling. This is an adjunct to your text resume, so make sure they get information about you that they otherwise would not get in the written resume.

2. Dress the Part: Dress like you would for an in person interview. Don’t wear a flashy tie or try to stand out with your clothing. It never works. Unfortunately, if they notice your clothes in video resumes, it’s probably a bad thing.  Show off your personality once you’ve landed the job.

3. Be Yourself: Don’t oversell. The best video resumes are the ones where you appear to be actually speaking with a real interviewer. How do you do that? Don’t sound rehearsed and definitely don’t read from a script. This goes back to being prepared. Know the questions they would likely ask and create a script that responds to them. Video resumes are best when they seem natural and conversational, as if you’re simply talking to an acquaintance about your qualifications and goals. Don’t force it. Let your personality speak for itself.

4. Have a Call to Action: This could be by placing the video resume on a professional profile that has your contact information, or tagging the video with your phone number and email if using it as a marketing tool on social media and job sites.
