It is now obvious that most of the impediments to electric vehicle mass production and adoption have been resolved. We have safer batteries that can even be recharged in 10 minutes or less. The price has come down to affordable level to judge by the recent announcement from Nissan to sell the Leaf for $25,000.000 after federal tax rebate and $20,000 where additional State incentives apply.

However one factor remains, the so-called “Range Anxiety”.  Here is the problem was defined 2 years ago on the EV blogs:“The fear of being stranded in an electric car because of insufficient battery performance - said to be a barrier to sales of electric vehicles…..or  Battery range is the Achilles' heel of electric cars. They can only go so far before their drivers need to plug them in for hours of recharging”.  This is one of the two things which has kept me from even thinking about electric vehicles (be they car or motorcycle). The range on electricity has to be comparable to that of a similar vehicle on gas; doesn’t have to equal or exceed, but at least 50% or so….. said Jim, a blogger.

 EV Range Extender - "Range Anxiety Eliminator"  Under this title post M Barkley said  “In theory, one could take the "Range Extender" with them, in the event they are having main traction pack issues, IE: End of Life, or taking a trip just outside the normal range of the EV. Or, if you get in a bind, this unit could be brought to a disabled EV, and feed its energy into the main pack, to allow for a few more miles in order to get the EV home or to a plug in. Think of this EV Range Extender, as an Emergency Tool, similar to having someone brings you a gallon of gasoline, but in this case, it's Energy for your EV's Traction Pack”.

It seems that we are facing a real issue here. The range of the available EVs to the exception of the Tesla roadster varies from 40 miles to 100 miles on a full charge. While this is appropriate for daily commute it does not cover longer trips or interstate travel until recharge stations are more widespread. Even then most commuters will prefer to have to stop for recharge no more often than they had to for their gas cars. So it does make sense to consider an EV Range Extender as "Range Anxiety Eliminator".

How big the market will be for the range extender will depend on progress both in battery performance and availability of recharge stations. No doubt you will need one if you are planning an outback trip or going on a safari.
